City Sonic#9, sounds installed in the city
Rescheduled since 2010 at the beginning of the cultural season parallel to our partner festival Cap Sonic organised by le manège.mons, City Sonic, conceived by Transcultures in collaboration with the cultural service of the City ofMons, continues to explore, with passion, the various forms of sound art.
City Sonic features a sound itinerary (installations, lounges,…)which goes from the Salle Saint-Georges (Grand Place) to theMaisonFolievia the Machine à eau (Water Machine), the médiathèque and the BAM (Fine Arts Museum of Mons) featuring more than 50 installations, environments, audio lounges imagined by Belgian and international, young and reknown artists. In the main location of the ancient Slaughterhouse (grandehalle du site des Abattoirs) we will propose an exhibition on the « object-sound » linking visual arts and the representation of sound sometimes without sound
City Sonic features also a selection of sound works by students of various Belgian and French art schools, partners of those « sonic emergences » (ESAPV Mons, ENSAV La Cambre/Brussels, ERG/Brussels, ESAD Strasbourg, ENSA Bourges… and LeFresnoy/Tourcoing). Those promising projects are shown among other playful, interactive, poetic site specific works which are sometimes created or readapted. This edition also presents more performances (like the Transonic ‘made in Belgium’ concerts orthe Sonic Archipel live sets,…) thanks to our extended collaboration with Cap Sonic.
This City Sonic 2011 is dedicated to Rolf Julius, German master of the sound creationand Ira Cohen, New York poet/mythographer, both recently departed to explore other sonic universes. Like the sonic adventurers who participate to the City Sonic experience, they open the doors of perception, fighting for the essential difference.

Audio-visual installation
 In the framework of the contemporary art biennale ARTour (on the theme of "Derivations"/drifts) organised by the regional cultural centre of centre, Transcultures/City Sonic curated this creation by multimedia artist/architect Pierre Larauza (Brussels) in the big funicular elevator of Strépy-Thieu (near La Louvière), in 3 parts reproducting the world record of the long jump (won in 1991 by Michael Powell in Tokyo) as a metaphor of this incongruous space and integrating the real sound (by Stéphane Kozik) of this impressive machinery.

In collaboration with Les Voies d’Eau du Hainaut ASBL et le SPW. www.artour.be - free entrance Dear City Sonic friends, Because of the storm which stroked this week the roof of the Royal Theater of Mons, this venue has been closed to the public and the performances for the opening of the festival and City Sonic drink will take eventually take place at the Maison Folie (Arbalestriers’room). Performances + drink + city sonic dj starting at 8’30 pm. The departure of the guided tour is still at the Abattoirs (main building), 17 rue de la Trouille at 6pm and the itinerary will follow this way: site des Anciens Abattoirs -> Machine a Eau -> BAM -> Salle Saint-Georges (launch speech at 8pm) -> Maison Folie (installations + performances by Yvat Collective and Alexander Schubert + Belle Jeunesse DJ Lounge and drink). The City Sonic/Campus party evening is maintained at the Bateau Ivre (starting at 11pm), next to the Theatre Royal on the Grand’Placecorner. WARNING : change of venue also for the sound art workshops Sonic Kids on the 3rd of September from 2pm to 5pm which will take place also at the Maison Folie, salle des Arbalestriers and salle of the Margin’Halle instead of the Royal Theater.
